Went to the track tonight....
 

Well we finally got the car together and got to the track tonight. It's only an 1/8th mile track and its up on the mountain so the air is terrible but the times were pretty good. We had some issues associated with the vacuum advance on the distributor so we ended up unhooking it and running only mechanical advance and 38 degrees total timing. My combination is a 455 .30 over, xe 274 cam, 062 heads with good valves and springs and gasket matched with no port work. Torker 1 intake, 750 carter competition series carb, th400 with a 10" continental converter and 3.73 rear gears with a 28x9 hoosier slicks. The first three passes with the car falling on its face were 8.30-8.40 passes with 1.80 short times. After fixing the timing issue the car totally came to life. The converter just plain WORKED also! Thanks Cliff for working with continental and getting me just what I needed. The next pass the car went 7.74 with a 1.61 sixty foot with the left front tire up in the air pretty good and followed it with a 7.62 with a 1.59 sixty as the air cooled down. All and all I am very pleased with how my ol unported cast iron headed motor runs. Hopefully we are VMP bound in a Pontiac Powered BUICK WAGON....and maybe tomorrow night I will get the video of the last pass posted..

You are welcome! Great 60' times for the combination of parts, quicker than my own car, best I've managed to date is 1.61. Let us know how it runs in the 1/4 mile? I see potential for high 11's with some good air......Cliff

Wow. How do you and other's car's run so good. I know someone with a 455, xe284, unported d-ports, ran a 7.48 in the 1/8 mile. My car has run 7.63, and that is with a 1.73 60 ft. Guess I need to do more work. Some of your of parts are certainly not recommended on this board. Great job, hope it goes quicker. Looking forward to the video.

Now you see why "Wagons" have the hook advantage from the weight transfer! Your last run calculates +- 11.96 in the 1/4. I'm surprised to see it took 38 total timing though, most combo's similar to yours generally like 32-36 degrees. But every combo is unique. Congrats!!! JD

I set of unported 225CFM D-Ports can make 1 horsepower to cubic inch on a 455ci. That can push a 3600lb car into the 11's.

And stock heads, my god man don't you realize the possible repurcushions of such actions! That performance w those parts goes against the actual thread of the fiber that's holds the entire Pontiac community together! Oh wait a minute I see you actually used the community specific torque converter! So never mind the torque converter is why your so fast! Ok good job! But watch your parts selection in future young man we run a tight ship around and deviating from the community plan is fround upon! Hahahaha lol! I'm in a good mood today just joking around guys! Thanks everyone, I am very pleased with the combination. I stalled it at about 2800 seemed to be where it left the hardest and the converter is a 10". Any more than that you will have to ask Cliff because converters are still somewhat of a mystery to me. When i get back to my windows based desktop I will put the video up even though my dad seems to need some video camera training but its still a decent clip. I was shifting the car at 5300 and that seems to be where it went the fastest. The timing we are going to play with a little more once we get to VMP. Probably wont be competitive there bracket racing because we don't have much time on the car at all, about 10 passes, the first 3 broke the th350, and the last 7 last night on the new 400. The motor still has the break in oil in it at this point and not much run time so as the rings seat in it might pick up a little more.

wow that has to be a pretty loose convertor!..i think my own conti. will start pushing the car around 2500? i will see tom. i know it will go to 2000, u must have the 4200 conti? mine is a 3200 restalled to 3800 suppose to be anyway. What does car weigh? Either way looking forward to vids!.. and great performance with a xe 274 wow!

The car weighs about 3500 lbs with me in it. The car got stripped and In some ways it got lighter but then as stuff like a roll bar and box steel cross member got added along with the 9" rear the weight came back. At about 2900-3000 the car wants to do more than the brakes will hold. With the xe 274 cam I have a torque monster more than likely in the amount of cubes I have. When I get back over the hill to my house from the parents I will try to get the video up. Like I said earlier, dad is a better engine builder than camera man. Guess I will have to take mom next time to operate the critical camera....:)

Wow 3500lbs .. that is a sleeper for a wagon.Those heads are they 062's or 62's.

62s from a 69 428. The motor has a stock crank, Cat Rods, and speed pro forged pistons that are flat tops so I am running a good amount of compression. The cranking compression numbers were around 220 and some of that is probably thanks to the baby camshaft i am running.
