Reclining seat in 68 GTO

I had to fix a seat the other day and found a what looks like a shocky in the seat along the side .
This had me and the trimmer stumped until we worked out the seat back has a double hinge ( one higher up on the bracket )
I gather its the "reclining passenger seat". I just looked a the PHS again and yes she was on it .I really need to get someone to explain the PHS and the options.
i thought it was only that both seats went forward to let people out of the back . How does it work ? button/ lever etc
I have only a cable with no eyelet just straight piece of wire.
We tried to pull the cable to see if it would recline back nothing.

Have you repaired one ? or what am i missing.
It looks like a spring inside the what i would call a strut is seized - the little opening you can see what looks like a spring or clip .
Sorry i did not take any pictures when the cover was off .
We will have the cover off again soon when we re-trim the car again . (wife did not like the colour)

If it is a recliner usually it is for reclining the seat back.:)

You should have a chrome handle/lever on the outer seat bottom just above the plastic side cover. You simply pull upward (rather hard) and then you'll feel the cylinder release to adjust the seat. It should stay in the position you choose once you release the handle. Hope that helps!

i wish i had the lever ... the main part missing.
So far we have worked out the cable is free and moving correctly but i think we need to strip the seat to get to the spring and free it up.

That's a nice option Craig. Like I mentioned, I've never even seen one in person.

greg looking at the task at hand i wish i never saw one . But when she's working it will be happy days. Until then it's a pain in my A.
Sooo much work to do to clean this up and get her back to her former glory.

MY 68 GTO has the Passenger Reclining Seat, and it does not recline becuase the recline Cylinder seems to lock-up from rust x time. They all fail the same way & I think PY has a fix for sell.

I have read that less than 1% of all GM A bodys had the reclining seat option. It loosks kind of odd in a 69 because the seat release button to fold up is on the side like a 68 for both pass and driver.
