Mr. Carburator Plumber Needed
Iam so done with this as i pull my hair out. not knowing what size or what NPT stands for, my problem is with the fittings that i need. so at this point i call it mission impossible ( for me ) Here is a list of the components that im trying to plumb together

NPT as said is pipe threads. Most reulators and race pumps use either 3/8 or 1/2, the street pump you have listed uses 1/4".
So you will need a 1/4" NPT male to -6 adapter to go to the hose to the regulator. -6 ends on the hose to the regulator. Two 3/8 male NPT to -6 fitting for the inlet and outlet of the regulator. Female -6 ends to hook all the hoses up they come in different anlges depending how you want to route the hose. You will need a 1/4 NPT to 3/8 fuel line hose to hook the pump to the chassis fuel line. |
NPT=National Pipe Thread is a TAPERED THREAD 1/8" pipe, 1/4" pipe, 3/8" pipe, 1/2" pipe, etc. The taper rate for all NPT threads is 1⁄16 (¾ inch per foot) measured by the change of diameter (of the pipe thread) over distance. The taper divided by a center line yields an angle 1° 47' 24" or 1.7899° as measured from the center axis. Commonly-used sizes are ⅛, ¼, ⅜, ½, ¾, 1, 1¼, 1½, and 2 inch, appearing on pipes and fittings by most U.S. suppliers. Smaller sizes than ⅛ are occasionally used for compressed air.
Most older Fuel Pump regulators and fuel pumps were a NPT thread. Newer Fuel Pumps and Regulators can have a "Straight A/N thread". The AN thread is a particular type of fitting used to connect flexible hoses and rigid metal tubing that carry fluid. It is a US military-derived specification stemming from a joint standard agreed upon by the Army and Navy, hence AN. The standard is sometimes mistakenly referred to as "Air Force-Navy", but it dates back to World War Two, before there was a separate US Air Force. AN sizes range from -2 (dash two) to -32 in irregular steps, with each step equating to the OD (outside diameter) of the tubing in 1/16" increments. Therefore, a -8 AN size would be equal to 1/2" OD tube (8 x 1/16 = 1/2). However, this system does not specify the ID (inside diameter) of the tubing because the tube wall can vary in thickness. Each AN size also uses its own standard thread size. (THE DEAL IS THAT A -8 A/N LINE DOES NOT TRULY HAVE A .500" INSIDE DIAMETER. MORE LIKE .437" INSIDE DIAMETER.) the statement above is close but not accurate if you are calculating actual fuel flow capability. Same deal when doing oil lines for coolers, remote filters, etc. If the hole in the block is a drilled 1/2" hole go one size bigger on the A/N hoses. When I was plumbing my fuel system ..I drew a picture from the tank to the carb to make sure I didn't miss anything.All your parts list what the inlets and outlets are..you just need the proper fittings.

THESE GUYS SAID IT PERFECT, Its really quit simple.I talked to Cliff rurglles as much as possible. He really helped me because of a street strip car. Pushed the no.8 stuff to me, never a regret. Car is a blast to run. All depands whats your doing with the car. I put in a No.8 fitting even in the fuel inlet nut. Everything was a breeze. Except for a glogged fuel filter that i never caught. Enjoy the ride! Rich P.s. remember one thing, best lesson i learned, upon acc. all fuel heads back towards the fuel inlet tube so put in a drop tank and go get em.!!

The pipe thread measurements are for pipe size that would be used.

On a NPT fitting the size is the ID of the fitting not the exterior so the bore will be 1/4 " on a 1/4" npt fitting and the leading edge of the threads are around 3/8 in Outside diameter , on fluid carriers the size is suposed to be the interior bore measurement not the exterior size

Also remember, as Tom stated, NPT threads are tapered. So, don`t go hog wild on tightening as the fitting gets "bigger" the more you tighten. You can split the bore if you are careless.

And if you are tapping a hole make sure you don't go bigger than the actual fitting to seal! |
