Speedometer Rattle
Even since I bought my Catalina in 1998, it's had this annoying speedometer "rattle."
It only makes the noise when the car is moving, and it is a mechanical rattle in the speedometer mechanism. It changes "pitch" at increased speed. I've taken the cable off and shot some white grease down it. That didn't change it at all. I figure it's probably a bushing, or bearing that needs some lube. Before I tear the dash apart, is there anyway to open the Speedometer itself to access the components? Thanks, MK |
Yes, there was dis-assembly provisions back then, but I would try a new cable first.

Might make a difference. Easier that changing out the whole speedo head anyway;) Ian:ausflag::ausflag: |

You can but you don't have to. You can get either take off the pad or lie under there to unscrew it. I think you might be able to take the speedo out with the pad off if you had to.

I took it all apart, and got the cable out. It was really clean, but I cleaned it and lubed it up. I had a heck of a time getting it back in, I haven't taken it for a test yet, since it is raining out now..

Couldn't wait. Took it out in the rain. GASP! (First time driven in the rain since 1999.)
No more rattle. Once again, PY forums worth a mint. Thanks, MK |
