1968 GTO Instrument Cluster Removal Advice Needed
 

I want to remove my instrument cluster. I know that i must remove the 3 top screws, speedo cable and radio dial nuts. There seems to be fasteners at the bottom of the cluster to remove. The service manual is not helpful. Can anyone provide info as to how to loosen the bottom of the cluster?

There are 2 speed nuts behind the dash cluster that attach to 2 studs. The go through the metal dash part and are found on the lower part of the instrument cluster. If you do a search I think someone has posted pictures.

Joe I have also had them with a stud over to the right side of the radio. heater control is a real pain i unhook it from the bezel before I remove it

Thanks for the additional info. I think mine has not nut by the radio as it is loose. I also need to remove and fix the heataer control.

I left my heater control in place and undid the three cables. You have to be careful not to scratch up the paint when you pull it. Dropping the steering column def. helps.
I took apart the fan switch (by bending back the tabs) and cleaned it all up inside and got it to work again. Tested it with an ohm meter for resistance to check it.

It's tight but you can remove the clock without removing the dash.

Any advice or suggestions to remove the original clock without removing the dash?
And what are the common problems with the clock not working?

Most common problem is the electrical contacts become pitted and burn't over the years. The operating mechanism may need a drop or two of light machine oil.

68 and 69 clocks and tachs are easier to remove than replace. A 1/4" ratchet with a flexible wand extension works well. The hardest part is getting the screws started when installing.
Pontiac recognized this and opened up the mounting tabs on the 70-72 tachs/clocks allowing the screws to remain in place. Just loosen the screws, rotate the clock and remove
