cylinder head date code
Hey there,
I am looking at a set of 6x heads online and the pictures don't show whether they are 6x-4 or 6x-8 There is a dated code though in the picture, it says "e286", can this help me figure out which it is? |
The date code E286 would be for May 28th 1976. The -4 or -8 will be stamped on one of the vertical castings next to where the valve cover bolts on. you will see a 1/2 inch square pad machined on the casting. the 4 or 8 will be there.

The Wallace site has a lot of info, including a picture of a head with code locations.

You can tell if you have the small chambered 6X heads just by sitting a head gasket on the deck.
With the head gasket in place the small chamber head will show way more than a 1/4" between the fire ring of the head gasket and where the lip of the chamber drops off. This is viewed on the spark plug side of the chamber. |
