cylinder head date code
Hey there,
I am looking at a set of 6x heads online and the pictures don't show whether they are 6x-4 or 6x-8 There is a dated code though in the picture, it says "e286", can this help me figure out which it is? |

The date code E286 would be for May 28th 1976. The -4 or -8 will be stamped on one of the vertical castings next to where the valve cover bolts on. you will see a 1/2 inch square pad machined on the casting. the 4 or 8 will be there.

You can tell if you have the small chambered 6X heads just by sitting a head gasket on the deck.
With the head gasket in place the small chamber head will show way more than a 1/4" between the fire ring of the head gasket and where the lip of the chamber drops off. This is viewed on the spark plug side of the chamber.

OOP'S wring photo, how ever the number stamped on the boss just to the left of the arrow
