62 tempest brakes

Hi I'm a new tempest owner I need to know if the rear brake shoes are the same as the front, and where can I get rear shocks that does not cost a arm and a leg ? thanks

TempestFugit 05-03-2012 10:27 AM

Front and rear are the same. Do a search on "shocks" in this forum there are a number of discussions and alternatives.

thejag 05-03-2012 12:36 PM

thanks autozone has a listing for the back but not the front, 15.99 in stock! I've been searching this forum for the rear shocks but no one has a clear answer, I don't want to give AdvanceAuto 120 dollars apiece for them, but I'll keep looking, thanks again

I do not think they will fit. Chances of finding brake shoes at your local autoparts stores are slim. Try Ames or eBay if Autozone's do not fit.

You'll need to get the shoes relined with new material.

I will look thru my stuff. I got them at a ok price. John

I've got 63 brakes from East West Auto 1-918-832-7077 and usa auto supply www.usapartssupply.com for not a bad price. I think they are the same as 61 and 62 brakes aswell

Are the shoes from Autozone bonded or rivited?

Wow, that is a scoop! Can you post a pic or the part number? Did you try them on the front.

Interesting,,,Auto zone has never had brake shoes for our cars. They start at 64 & go up from there. We would like to know the Autozone part number. I just tried a search & not available from AZ.

I too am surprised about the brake shoes. But for the rear shocks try part number 82047 from NAPA. I just looked at mine and they have the number 739047 stamped right in the metal. They might be listed as being from a late 50's or early 60's chevy or GMC truck shock. Hope this helps.

azkeebler 05-04-2012 06:50 PM

Interesting. My search comes up with these for $16.99. Pic look like riveted though.
Part Number: 245
Alternate Part Number: FB24

mechanickeith 05-04-2012 11:37 PM

With that number 245, I click on "info" & it says Does not fit my car!!

Alternate should be FB245.

Worth looking into, Keith. Take a used shoe to the store to compare? Could lead to other interchange parts...

mechanickeith 05-05-2012 12:45 AM

Checked both numbers at my local store, none in stock. Will check the wearhouse tomorrow & see whats available.

thejag 05-05-2012 09:04 PM

they are riveted and the part # is 245

mechanickeith 05-05-2012 11:09 PM

# 245 & FB 245 are NOT the shoes for our Tempest's. They are for a 64 & up A body car. I laid a 61-63 shoe next to the 245 shoe & the 245 shoe is 1/4 inch wider. Wont work on our 61-63 tempest's.

I bought my shoes and wheel cylinders threw Northen auto parts of
