Steering column and horn
4 Attachment(s)
My final assembly is almost complete.
My horn is not working. I wrung out the wiring and it seems the green wire going back to the steering column has continuity but not completing the circuit. The plastic turn signal cancelation ring doesnt seem like its making contact with the copper plunger in the turn signal switch I posted up some pics. Is something incorrect? should the ring be seated in the column further? |
I would say you have the wrong cancelling cam. There should be a place for the horn contact to sit in. There also should be a spring that sits on top of the cam to give the springing effect so the horn button is off the contact when not depressed.

Whats the part number on the cancelling cam, I'll check the number for you?
|
Is it in upside down? Looks like it to me.... but it could be the wrong cam to begin with. ;)

Bob,
The part number is 9787616 I included more pics too |
Cam looks right, Do/did you have the metal contact plunger in the tube your finger is on in last pic?
|
Yes Jeff,
Its the white wire coming from the horn buttons with a spring on iton the sterring wheel. I am using the deluxe wheel. Seems like the cam needs to slide down the steering shaft in the column to press on the copper plunger thats on the turn signal switch but it cant slide down anymore. |
Try some lubricant on the copper plunger to see if it frees it up to make contact with the cancelling cam. A good lithium grease should work?
|
Plunger is free and all the way out. The canceling cam isnt making contact with the plunger.
|
Is that the cam that came with the car? Did the horn work when you got the car?

That's the right number for 67 w/o tilt, looks right for your car. Here's factory installation pictures, might help.

It could be that the steering shaft needs to be adjusted forward in relation to the rest of the column. How big of a gap is there between the steering wheel & the column? If the gap is too large, you'll need make a minor adjustment & re-set the clamp on the shaft in the engine compartment.
|
Make sure that when you ground the plunger (that mates with the underside of the turn signal cam) that the horn blows. If you don't get the horn to blow then you may have a grounding issue. Basically when the horn button is pressed, ground goes from the main steering shaft to this plunger.
Do you have the little plate installed at the other end of the column that grounds the center shaft? It fits into the rubber rag joint and supplies ground to the shaft from the steering box. You should be able to take a screwdriver from the main shaft to the plunger and get the horn to blow. Then I would be worried about the proper assembly of the cam. |
I had the same problem with mine. With the canceling cam removed, grab hold of the plunger that is in the steering column and pull out on it. You willl problably find that the spring inside the plunger has weakened and the plunger isn't coming completely out causing it to not make contact with the back of the canceling cam. I had to remove the turn signal and the spring is held in with a piece of metal that is pressed into the plastic. I pried that out with a screwdriver and replaced the spring with a new longer one, and that took care of my problem. Hope this helps and that is the problem.
