LH Mirror Gasket Fitment Issue
 

Doing the some assembly on my 71 TA clone, and I simply cannot get a mirror gasket to fit the contour of the mirror base. Ive tried 2 different repro gaskets, and both part number (LH & RH) of the originals, flipped both ways and none seem right.

Is it possible that this car has an incorrect LH mirror on it prior to my purchase ? The base doesnt appear to be distorted or tweaked our of shape..thoughts...

Initially, the mirror needed wet sanding and polishing, but now in my frustration, Ive nicked it and it needs to be repainted. I am considering pulling the mirror of my real TA (which I really do not want to do), or just buying one off ebay and having it re-shot after I verify fitment.

Thick side goes to the bottom, but the contour will fit either way. I would make sure that it is an F body mirror by comparing the base to the other side. The Repoop gaskets suck I would look for an original gasket

I was having the same problem but with both mirrors. I ended up finding the originals, putting the number stamped into them on the bottom into GM parts direct and they came up @ like $9 ea. The numbers were different L and R. Of course they stuck me with like $11 in shipping but I had the originals at least. Put them on and still had pretty much the same problem. I got them to fit the best I could and called it a day.

I had the same problem with the repro gaskets not letting the mirror's base sit "inside" of the gasket. Bought some nice used oem's on ebay and they fit correctly. So, it must be an issue with the repro quality.

As mentioned, I have both repro and original gaskets and neither fit. Either the mirror base is somewhat distorted, its from a different model, or this is the factory fit.

I compared it to the mirror on my 73 (which fits its gasket better) and it appears to be the same length and curvature, so I am going with distorted. Gonna try and find another mirror.

Don't sweat it too much, I've got a small box of original gaskets and none of them fit perfectly on any of the mirror bodies I have....I guess its another GM "close enough" effort.
Its also odd that I find there are different versions of the mirror bodies as well...never knew that before I started comparing all the spares I had when looking to make up the best two for my car.

There are a few diffent versions of those mirrors. I found that the repros seem to be the later version. The mirror lens is slightly different on the different versions as well. At a glance, you cant tell the difference in the versions until you start mixing the pieces. Then you see it.

Yeah, some use two screws to mount the mirror head, some use one. I was thinking there must have been a couple of different suppliers, maybe?

Per a helpful suggestion, I used a heat gun to re-contour one of the repros, and it worked out. Thanks again.
