Disc brakes with factory wheels... fitment?
My father is dead set on doing a disc brake conversion. (66' GTO) It has factory 14" Rally I wheels. I do not want to replace the wheels, trying to keep this car as original in appearance as possible. I haven't had the time yet, but was going to remove a wheel off of the car and try it on the front of his 72' Lemans to see if it will clear.
Seeing what others have used on their own cars of this vintage. Thanks in advance. :usa2: |
Disc brakes with factory wheels... fitment?
My 66 has disc brakes from a late 60's early 70's A body car and the original rally 1 wheel fits, there close but do fit. jd grim 66 gto

I put discs from a 71 Monte Carlo and my 14" rally ones fit just fine. I hear most aftermarket kits need 15" wheels.
|
Had my '66 converted a few years back from standard drums to front power disc and was able to keep the factory Rally I's.
It's tight, but no problems so far. |
As Mitch said most require 15" wheels for the conversion. There are kits that will let you use 14" wheels, but you'll have to search for them or get used disc brake parts off a car that has stock 14" wheels.

The old dual piston calipers from 67 and 68 i think were the ones that could cause interference with some 14" wheels.
They used 2 different Rally2 codes in 67-68 depending if it was drum or disc. |
What year did Pontiac switch to 15s as the standard size wheel? I know that my 71 Camaro still had stock 14s.

It comes with all parts needed. Look it up. Good Luck Jack |
I've seen them Jack but wonder why the upper control arms are included in the kit, and no disc brake backing plates are included. Usually the disc brake spindles are included too. CH28689 and CH28690 kits.. correct?
I do know the original drum spindles must be modified too for the changeover. |

I bought the CH28690 for power brakes. CH28689 is for non power. Backing plates I am not sure about as everything is still in boxes till it gets above 50 degrees outside. I bought every suspension part brand new (except torsion bar) , so my car should ride and handle like a new 67 with front discs when done. Jack |
When you get to it to do it keep us informed... with pictures. I'm planning on doing the conversion too, hopefully sometime this summer. But no power brakes... tho hydro boost might be in the cards for the future.

Give Scarebird http://www.scarebird.com/
a pm im sure he will be able to set you up he is a member of PY and has a great product Let me know how you make out with him I didn't use his stuff on my 66 GTO only because I had already purchased a SSBC I would have saved a lot of cash with Scarebirds Product I set my car up both ways for what ever mood im in and for car shows so with the SSBC I had to buy a set of 15 cragers for the front was already running 15 in the rear 14 in the front and a set of 15 rally 1 with tires so you can see the savings added up quick Break down I would have saved nearly $1500.00 going with Scarebird |
Buddy of mine used the Right Stuff kit on his 68 with factory original Rally 2's. Had to grind the mounting bracket down a tiny bit and they work fine. No problems. I would assume Rally 1's to be the same deal

I am using Scarebirds disc brake setup and even though I have yet to actually drive my 1966 GTO, my 14" wheels clear the calipers.
