Fuel Pump
Looking to run an electric fuel pump in my 68 firebird, 455 with a Quadrajet. Need advice on pressure I don't want to run a regulator if i can avoid it. Looking at the carter P4070 or P4594 suggestions on what one I need.
Thanks |
fuel pump

IMHO, deadheading a street car is asking for trouble. OK for race where continuous use is a non-factor. I had a deadheaded system(mallory 90gph) on a street/strip car several years ago. Hated it.Alot noisier than a return system and the pump generated excessive heat(wear ). Even OEM deadheaded system had there drawbacks(vapor locking).BUT IF you do decide to go that route I would prefer one of the quality Aeromotive pump, just not sure if they offer one(self-regulated) without a return.

X2 on the return line. On my 76 TA 455 I installed a new tank with a new RobbMC 1/2"pickup, Jeg's pump kit with braided lines, fuel filter, 130GPH pump and a deadhead regulator. The pump within a few minutes would start losing and fluctuate it's pressure do to being deadheaded. I called Jeg's to complain, and they sent me a new pump and a return style regulator at no cost. I had to plumb a return line, but now the car has no fuel issues. It no longer runs out of fuel, pressure remains constant, the car now idles smoother and runs better than it ever did. This was an expensive system, but I really like it and it looks and works the way I had hoped when I started the changeover.

What is wrong with the factory AC Delco stock replacement pump? Are you sure you even need an electric pump?

carby emptying over night takes a while to wind engine over on first start up to fill carby thought an electric pump may cure this, could it be a problem with the existing pump, it is an aftermarket item of unknown brand or breed?

Carb
Sounds like a carb issue and not fuel delivery.
I can let mine sit for a week and she will fire up After a second or two. Find out where the fuel is going. Gerry |
RobbMC has everything you need. I'd run the mechanical fuel pump with vapor return. Easy install and works great. Without the vapor return (Edelbrock 1713 pump) I ran into vapor lock pretty soon. Maximum pressure for a qjet will be about 6-7psi

You don't need an electric pump. You just need to fix your carburetor. Why spend money on something you don't need just to bandaid something else that needs to be fixed. People are always anxious to install an electric pump and in many cases it's a waste of time and money and is noisey. An electric pump also adds a fire risk bacause if your carb float sticks open your pump will just keep pouring out the fuel and flood the engine with fuel and one spark or engine backfire and you have quite a situation on your hands. Ask me how I know?

Q-jet well plugs are known for leaking all the fuel out of the bowl over night. There is a procedure for repair in cliffs carb book.

Qjets are known to do that. Mine is built by Cliff and still does it. I'm not sure if it is as fast as over night but two days for sure. I have a RobbMc 1100 pump and regulator with return.
