'65-'66 Rear Axle Interchange Question
I always thought that big-car rear axles were essentially the same from '65 to at least '70, but recently had someone tell me that a '66 axle is wider overall than a '65 axle. Doesn't sound right to me. Can anyone shed any light on this? Thanks!

Same. Check the other threads in archives. Entire assembly is identical '65-6. Axles will pull out and stick in to either one. '65-70 internals swap except for '69 GP. |
same ...

Yep 65-66 direct swap.. 67, 68-70 housings vary. gears swap freely 65-70 though

Rear Axles
Hi Larry
Not trying to hijack this thread, just wanted to thank you for the lead on the 3.08 posi carrier & gears. Worked out GREAT :D Thanks, Ron |
FWIW: the pinion seal shows a different part number for the 65 and the 66 to 70. I've never compared the seals to see if there is a machining difference in the carriers or not...

The pinion seal started to leak some time later and my diff guy was having difficulty getting a seal. I would assume he was looking for a '66 seal and I never told him it was a '65 diff. He eventually solved the problem but its something to keep in mind for the future. Thanks Ian :ausflag::ausflag::ausflag: |
Rock Auto calls for SKF 19310 for '65 and SKF 19273 for '66. They are definitely different. Here are the specs:
