Who has Rally Stripes?
Who restored their car and put the optional rally stripes on them? I'm talking about the thin pinstripes that travel along the lower body line. I've seen them in a few old pics and some factory literature but I've yet to them in person. Thinking about putting them on my car but I'm having trouble committing.

My vote would be to do so, make it unique, step out of the box. Like you already observed, no one else has done so, that should be incentive enough to pull the trigger.

Not a fan & I usually like stripes on cars.

I've seen them at a show here and there. Before I knew they were actually a factory option, all it looks like to me is that someone bought a cheap ass roll of standard double pinstripe tape and taped it on to the lower body line instead of the common upper side installation that all cars get today. Well, maybe not anymore, but during the 80's and 90's every car on the planet had that double pinstripe down it's side. Personally I'm not a fan at all and wouldn't do it but it's YOUR car and all you have to please is yourself!

Suppose I could always buy a cheap ass roll of double pinstripe tape to see how I like it.

You beat me to it Ken. I was thinking about adding them to my car too....but probably won't as it's just a little too much trouble for the results.
By the way, my first '68 back in '82 had them from the factory. You can barely see it in this pic... http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/...pictureid=7652 |
I have them on mine. Came that way from the factory so I had them put on after it was restored.
|
I've thought about it, but haven't decided to add them yet.
Here's a photo I found when I was looking for examples: http://clubs.hemmings.com/indygto/da...69blackgto.jpg They certainly emphasize the "coke bottle" shape. |

A cheap roll of pinstripe later...
http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/...1&d=1395776655 http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/...1&d=1395776660 I should probably take the cover off and roll it out of the garage to get a better look but I'm kind of on the fence. Seems to call a lot of attention to itself but that could be because I'm not used to seeing them. |
Hmmmm…..Okay, I think I’ve figured out why I don’t like about them. On the rear quarter, it’s too close to the rocker trim. It makes it look too “busy” there. Those rear stainless moldings already accent the body line that’s just above it and the tape parallels it and seems to hide the body line itself. Tracking between the doors, the coke bottle affect seems painted on because of the pinstripe rather than relying on the body line itself. It also seems strange to the eye that the line follows the rear rocker molding parallel behind the tire but it angles up over the rocker cover between the tires. Looks like the car jumped concrete divider and bent the body in half over that crown.
Again, you’re not (and SHOULDN’T be) worrying about what others think of it. Just offering my personal opinion. Bye the way, the car teaser pictures look great! – I love the color (so there I’m against the common anti-green crowd that seems to be out there!) to each his own!! |

Guess this guy really like the look... |
I don't mind the rear 1/4, it's the hump behind the door that I'm not too fond of. I stuck these on in about 5 minutes after two beers so there may be room for improvement, but they seem to generally follow the factory diagram in the first post.
Overall I just find them to stick out like a sore thumb on the green. Not sure if a hand striped set would be any different. Maybe my opinion will change when I get it out of the garage and quit staring at them from the ground. Thanks for the compliment on the color :D |
I'm kinda on the fence about them. I don't dislike them but I don't like them enough to go through the trouble for the minor effect. If my car came with them, I'd put them back on but otherwise, I wouldn't do it.
By the way, you did a good job applying them Ken. No waves that I can see. |
my friend had a 69 cvt in liberty blue that had them from the factory. I tried them with tape on a few of my cars over the years and none of them lasted a day. I find they make the car look bigger and higher as well as drawing your eye away from the beautiful beltline shape of the car (the judge stripe played to that strength).
I would never add them to a car but if my car had them on the PHS I'd be torn. If you decide to go for it I'd at least go with a complimentary rather than contrasting color to tone down the effect. Why not put the tape version on one side only for a while as you use the car. Seeing it in different light and at different angles will help you decide. btw the 69 codes were 494 D98 at $13.69 and when I look at my PHS collection of about 400 non-judge 69's the take rate is about 1.5% |
