BUILD SHEET RECOVERY?
 

Anyone had success cleaning one up like this example?

It was between floor metal and the original under carpet heat/ noise padding, may have gotten wet too.

Not as thin as it looks, just in the missing areas. Can "almost" see the build details, but needs some help.

Someone told me some years ago they "might" come back if soaked in a isopropyl / water solution...(?)

I believe soaking it in acetone will work. Try it on one of the bottom pieces first.

starter fluid for the bbq pit..its what they use to wash checks too...test it first..it can be agressive

Paint thinner and a cookie sheet or throw away aluminum baking pan. Just enough to cover it. Lightly swirl the mixture by shaking the pan. Change out the fluid when too dirty.

Some years back a guy on here had one just about same degree of total dark from floorboard. He used a baking pan of similar size parameter and let it soak in about 1/2" of lacquer thinner for extended periods.

believe he used a facial make-up brush to give it some help along the way while soaking. After 2 or 3 rinse/repeat cycles he had a fully legible Bsheet.

acetone and bbq fluid sound good too - bbq fluid might be the most lingering aroma though. same problem with gas and diesel fuels - fwiw

if you can still access the area where the sheet was found - test various solvents and see what removes the tar stains from floor the easiest and gentless.

You could probably pull most the info in a dark room holding a light source behind it.
Possibly capture it with a camera ... or have a dictation assistant manually transcribe the data as you call it out. pita

I had one that was unreadable from a 69 Z/28 that cleaned up very good with brake cleaner.

x2 on the lacquer thinner in a cookie sheet method. My TA's build sheet was as black as yours & after 4-5 five changes of the thinner it came out legible.

I used Mineral Spirits in a cookie sheet for six minutes then soaked/rinsed twice more changing water twice.

Pressed in paper towels drying flat. I can read it now. Top missing chunk I have in a file at my office, and will clean that piece later.

Use prep solvent in a cookie tray and let it soak over night, The tar will lift out of the paper and not harm the buildsheet. My old black 71 Judge's build sheet looked just like yours and lightened up and your could read everything.

I would stay away from anything stronger then prep solvent.

THE BOSS: this is the Palisade Green 455 w/ RA 70 driver GTO Steve V went through last year.

The document looks much clearer now since its dried.
