Restoring a Build Sheet
 

What is the best way to clean or restore a build sheet? Mine has a lot of dirt and some rust on it. I've brushed some of the dirt away with a paint brush, but the paper is pretty brittle. Thanks

if its brittle you are in trouble...if it where me, id have it scanned...and put it in a sleeve and leave it alone..use a sleeve dont laminate it.

then play with the scan, run it thru some photo software and clean it up.


Messing with the build sheet raises eyebrows when you try to sell..keep it as you found it. You can have a repop sheet made from your scan.

No one is looking for a perfect clean buildsheet..to me..i like what you have more than a nce clean legible piece.

I do think, if it black with tar and almost not legible..then doing something isnt a big deal..but..every one wants to restore them, and it takes away form the credibility of the sheet.

Can you read the dealer name?

Someone with Photoshop experience may be able to get the buildsheet to be clearer.

I would like to be able to clean the dirt off without damaging it, I can read it through the rust.

find a museum in town. Ask them who restores their documents, its cheap and does wonders...

It will destroy the paper.

Do a search for lacquer (or laquer) and build (or buildsheet) you will find some answers. I think this one has worked the best for me...

I'm pretty basic & old school @ buildsheet handling: photo copy it ASAP and leave the original alone in a protected sleeve away from sunlight. Have read that if exposed to common UV daytime lighting, original print will fade out and paper can disintegrate. :2cents:

I have used Q-tips to very carefully remove dirt enough to be able to read it. scan it and print. May also use photo software to make it look better.

After I have gotten it where I can read most of it or at least most important info., I laminate it to preserve what is still there.

There is only so much you can do.

At least you can get a PHS on it. That helps with info.

I found mine if pretty good shape. Left it on a work bench and a week later the light exposure made the ink fade away to nothing. I'd love to find a way to make it legible again. Scan it right away, store the original in a plastic sleeve and keep it in the dark.

I put mine in an 8 x 10 frame, untouched and as I found it. Looks kinda cool that way.

No I did not. I looked for a local place that restores documents but I didn't find anything. I currently have it in a plastic sleeve in a folder to protect it from the light. I would still like to get it cleaned up and scan it, then leave the original in a safe place. I might try the lacquer thinner yet.

You might want to keep an eye on the print. Others have stated that the light will fade the print. But I agree it would look pretty cool framed.
