1968 GTO clone
I am looking into purchasing a 68 GTO clone, 72 455HO/TH400 in it, PW and front disc brakes..
What are the problem areas on these cars? What is different from a LeMans/Tempest to a GTO for that year? Rear end different? I don't know much about those year cars. Thanks for any advice! |
You are in the wrong section of forum. But your question is quite vague. Try 68/69 gto tech help section and you may get s reply.but you really need to do some home work . Doug

Make sure the rear end tracks correctly. the center frame section is flimsy. check for straightness. It could be rolled under. Put car on a drive on lift and inspect for rust or quality of rust repairs. Look for cracking bondo. Check rear window operation. Dont pay gto price for a clone.

They rot around the window frames, lower front fenders core support especially under the battery.
Frames wereally a problem back by the suspension mounting points |

The rear would be the same, 8.2 10 bolt single track is standard and limited slip is available in any model I think. The best thing you can do is see it in person, ask to put it up on a rack as suggested above and drive it. Good luck. |
Rear glass channel and therefore the trunks rust on these cars. The lower corners of the rear glass opening have a perfect water retaining shape. Once that rusts through, the trunk is next. Also, at the base of the windshield where it's sealed to the dash. If it's a vinyl top car check it very carefully for soft metal under that. Especially around the rear glass, sail panels and drip rails.
Other than that, they rust in the same typical places as the rest. |
