There is a small spring on the latch. There is no spring to hold it open or closed. As far as I know, you need a new latch if the spring is missing.

The latch has a small spring that returns it to the up position when you release the button.

When the button is pushed is the latch supposed to stay in the down position till you close the door ??

Now when I push the button the latch releases but I'm holding the door closed by pushing the button. When I release the button the latch returns to the up position and the door is latched close. The only way to open the door is to pull it open while holding the button in.

So I guess the latch should stay in the open position till the door is closed. Correct ???

So I need a new latch ??

Thanks, Larry

Sounds like it is working correctly. But you might need to adjust the catch. The weight of the door alone should let it drop down. If you have to pull it down the latch is hanging up or the cam arm on the side is bent or dragging on something.

You dont have a problem, that's how it works.

Bingo, that is the problem. When I push the button it only disengages the latch about 80%. If I put slight pressure on the door it will open right up. So either my latch mechanism is worn and I'm not getting full travel or the catch needs to be adjusted.

Thanks for the help.
