COMP 041 clones

No experience, but the 51-314-4 does not even look close to an 041. I'd go with the 51-116-3

The 51-116-3 is a very good cam. Makes good power and is very street able in a 455.

The first Cam is very much like a Crane custom ground roller that I used in my 455 over 30 years ago, other than my Cam had only …469" lift with 1.5s.
It ran very well with stock chambered 1971 #96 heads and pulled good vacuum even before I placed the Blower on top! |
the 116 cam is with 1.65 rockers.the lift on the cam is abt 470 aprox with the 1.5 rockers. they should state that on the cam card somewhere.

That first cam is an XE series steep ramp cam.

I cant give you any comments really because I haven't run the car enough before doing a mini mechanical restoration, but the 74 SD I picked up late summer has the 51-314-4 in it. Test driving the car before I purchased it seemed as if it was short on bottom end power, and light on vacuum for the brakes. I will be finishing a tune up here soon and will be able to give some vacuum readings and such, but with winter here wont be able to drive it for some time.

Mill your SD heads .060" to get the comp up from 8.4 to near 9.3 and not only will your vacuum come up , but so will the motors power along with improved idle.

With different lifts where the #'s are taken from, are these very similar cams on a tighter LCA or much different animals? I have no clue how to convert or if anyone has used the 51-314-4.
This is way beyond the scope of my ability to convert to comparable #'s, hoping for some more definitive differentiation. The 51-116-3 looks to be a very viable 041 clone, the other ????? |
If you are looking for a RAIV replacment cam the Melling SPC-8 is a direct replacement. The Crower 60919 is also a RAIV replacement cam and I've used it many times. It works great. https://www.crower.com/media/pdf/2008b/126-128.pdf. I think if you do a search on here you'll find lots of people like it. I'm curious though why you want it. What's your combination? Maybe something else would work better. Cubic inch? compression? headers? auto or manual trans? Converter? gear ratio? Street? Race? Street/strip? All of these need to be taken into consideration when picking a cam.

The first cam 51-314-4, is the same cam that Half Inch Stud recently installed in his gto. Dont think he cares for it compared to the one it replaced.

Likely too much time off for the Holidays has me searching around the net more than I should. This "other 041" grind just caught my eye, as I have never seen or heard mention of it before.
What I am guessing here is comp pulled the LCA in 4 degrees and recommends installation 4 degrees advanced from that. Every thing else seems a difference measured in frog hairs? So I surmise this is cam is intended to have some added low end torque over the tried and true, and beloved 041, at the expense of idle quality compared to the factory grind? HIS is the lab rat on this one, a 455 with 48 heads!! What CR does that work out t:eek:?? I'm over 11:1 in a 400 w/#48's. |

I'm not trying to choose a cam, just looking for WHY and for WHAT outcome, with all the smart guys here someone has to have an answer for me.
