Automatic choke
 

Hi everyone. I just got my '71 Q-Jet returned from a rebuild. Looks good and appears to act fine except for the automatic choke. It doesn't close when I try to start the engine. The butterfly moves freely and will close if you hold it. Other then that, it stays open. I have a suspicion that something is missing. I posted 2 pics. Might not be the best, but does anyone see something that is missing from the choke mechanism. I could probably take a better side shot tomorrow. Thanks, Carmine.

I don't see the Choke stat on the manifold. It is what makes the choke work.

Need a good pic of the right side of the carb and intake.
Is there a well in the manifold on the right side?
If so then a choke (stove) thermo spring is mounted there and a cover is over it.
A rod will then run up to the choke butterfly to open and close it.
(according to temperature)

That is how my 72s choke operates.

BUT pretty sure this a 72 only deal so Im not sure about your 71.

If you look at page #205 in the Ames catalog, you can see a 68-70 choke thermostat housing , coil and rod for $38. Says it will also fit a 71 455-HO but says nothing about a 71 400 CID.
Is there any detail / drawing in your assembly manual?

Saw that myself. Thanks. I was wondering if I could make that work somehow or what the difference might be. I will check the assembly and repair manuals. Good idea, Carmine.
