rear main seal question
 
Can the rear main seal be changed to a one piece seal with out pulling the engine? The engine is in a '69 Firebird with a 350 & manual trans.
It seems to me that it probably can't but just wondering what others have done.
The transmission has to be removed to change the seals as well so we will be looking right at that rear main.

Even if you could...I wouldn't. You'll probably have a worse leak than you started with.

Nope. You'll have to pull the engine. Not a bad job, and you'll be able to clean and reseal the whole thing while you're at it. Freeze plugs, paint touch up, etc. And a great opportunity to detail out the engine bay. Even with a 2 piece rear main, pulling the engine is the only real way to do an effective job. And in the end, its cleaner and actually less of a struggle.

Even if it "can" be done...it shouldn't be done in the car.

Yanking the engine drops the frustration level to about 1/10th, and triples the chances of a successful completion.

It can and has been done "in vehicle" for years(Kent-Moore makes a tool for this purpose) but I don't recommend it unless you have no other choice.

The problem with installing a neoprene seal "in car" is that you cant fill the "anti-rotation holes" in the block, and oil will bypass around the seal.

I call BS on anyone saying it can be done in a firebird. You can't get the pan off. At least I couldn't. This was with the motor jacked up as hight it could with the trans still attached. By the time you disconnect all that you need to, to raise the motor your about 45 minutes from pulling it any way.
