Source for 3" main, 4" stroke forged cranks?

I'm ready to hop off the fence on my build and buy a crank. Who has the best price and quality on a Scat or similar forged 3" main, 4" stroke crank for a 400 block?

ponyakr 10-08-2017 02:05 AM

The Spotts' site shows forged cranks for $649 + shipping. If that price is current, it's the best I know of. Have no idea if price is current or if he has one in stock.

RPM shows one for $720.

KRE shows 'em for $750 + shipping. You may have to call around to find one in stock.

Sandoval's price is $795 + shipping.

The Butler price is $800 + shipping.

These were on back order several months ago. I ordered one from Paul Knippen's Muscle Motors and ended up with two cranks as our prior order came in. I think Paul kept the second one that came in so you might want to drop Paul a line at (630) 400-4441 as he may still have it in stock. If not, he can get you one at a fair price.

Jack Ferris 10-09-2017 03:50 PM

Are these a 2.20 crank pin?

chiphead 10-09-2017 08:47 PM

Yes, these use the BBC RJ.

KRE is out of the standard weight scat forging. I sent Paul a PM on FB asking what he had in stock.

What do you guys think of the RPM forgings?

hurryinhoosier62 10-09-2017 09:09 PM

I would definitely have it magnafluxed and stroke/journals checked before using it. I've heard good and bad about their forgings. Also, have the hardness confirmed. If the crank grinder you take it to has no idea what I'm talking about, RUN! PM me and I send you the phone number of crank grinder who does.

The dimensions on my Scat forging were near flawless.

Aren’t most of the overseas pieces forged at the same places?

Dragncar 10-12-2017 12:22 AM

Has anyone ran the cast 4" stroke cranks hard and had trouble ? Bet with that short of stroke they are pretty tough. The cast 400 cranks hold up very well.

That is like saying all steel is produced in Detroit. (Not likely).

China is such a big market for vehicles and industry there are MANY MANY Forging houses for steel products. One of the largest Turbo manufacturers has a new massive Plant in China and is using China Aluminum, China Steel, and China Workers to put the stuff together.

So to assume that a few places are making all of the parts might be a stretch.
There are 'layers" of manufacturing: Jim/Bob's Forging House, ABC Forging House, General Motors Forging House, etc. GM sells more vehicles in China than the USA/ Mexico and possibly Canada sales combined in a year. A Lot of Buicks.

SCAT has a high enough volume that they can use a quality Forging House. And possibly they still do all of the machining of their cranks still in the USA. Being "spot on" with a SCAT crank does not surprise me.

If one asks a crank company where the steel is sourced from, most...if not all will tell you it is proprietary info. I was told this from Ohio Cranks when I purchased my billet crank. Doesn't hurt to do your homework. Ask around and see if you can gleen any info on the base steel and it's origins. I'd think if any crank manufacturers are using "High Grade" American steel...they'd display it and wear it like a crown. One can source "dirty steel" from any country....including the USA.

Kind of more of a question vs. an assumption. I ask because I really don't know.
You say SCAT uses a quality forging house. I gather SCAT has the ability to Xray, if you will or do whatever else is needed to determine if the forgings are up to their standards?
Again I'm asking as I know very little about this.
Is SCAT the only one doing this?
I have a SCAT 4.25 forging from Butler's and a Star Galaxy 4.500 forging from FrankG. I don't really care which one I use, but I prefer the better of the 2.

Tom Vaught 10-12-2017 01:20 PM

Have no knowledge of the Star Galaxy Cranks. believe Butler and Frank were involved in some deal with them.

The Scat stuff first sold by Wade/Mark (BOP) and Bob/Frank were good cranks for the money. Metal was pretty clean. Clean metal means less chance of a imperfection causing a crank in the crank and it failing. Have no knowledge on the new Scat Cranks, only the fist run stuff which I bought 3 of them.

Molnar uses his own source of Chinese steel. Scat likely has their own source. StarGalaxy Cranks initially tested good.

BruceWilkie 10-12-2017 03:05 PM

I decided that a fully counterweighted billit of high quality us steel is worth it.

gata79 10-12-2017 06:42 PM

My star galaxy had to be replaced after one season. Lots of cracks.

'ol Pinion head 10-12-2017 06:52 PM

Wonder if one could source an unmachined forged 3" main 4" stroke in a shipment of SCAT's???
Would like to duplicate a 4.06 stroke crank, but with 3" main, need 2.25 rod journals in order to offset grind.

Tom Vaught 10-12-2017 07:10 PM

Be worth a call OPH!

My 4.250 Star Galaxy I bought from Butler in 07 is still perfect. And it see some decent power in a heavy car.

You could just buy a Scat 3"x4" crank with the BBC rod journals and send it to Crankshaft Specialists. I talked to them about stroking up a 4" crank. They just let it sit in a chrome bath all weekend and build up the journal. Then they can offset grind it to whatever spec the thickness of the chrome allows.
Yours would be a piece of cake, not that expensive either.
