Tach cable
Anybody know if big truck speedometer cables might use the same ends as a mechanical tachometer cable? Pictures of some for sale look to be the same, but I can't see the details- whether the ends have the same square drive as a tach cable. I need an 11' long cable for the rear engine lakester, and race suppliers of cable need time to build long cables- not to mention many $$$.

Can't answer your question, Jack, but have a suggestion. Speedometer shops used to be pretty common and they made cables. I'd check your area's yellow pages and you might be able to find one or two. If you have a cable, you can use the ends from that to make a new cable. You could probably even solder one together, yourself. Just order the cables on-line.

I *believe* they are, but can't say that 100% certainty. Bought speedometer adapter at a truck parts place before, so there should be some crossover?

Thanks for the suggestions.
Although I haven't really answered my question yet, I ordered a truck cable that's long enough. I'll know soon! |
The truck cable was almost a perfect fit. But the magneto-drive end was simply square, lacking the needed "blade". I carefully un-brazed the blade piece from my old cable and attached it to the new one. I won't know if it's okay until I finish the car enough to fire it up.
