Cameo White Welting yellowed

Short of replacing the welting, is it possible to safely clean the welting? Its sticky and yellow/brown in spots. Its an untouched 24k mile '78 and I would rather not replace if i can clean it up a bit. Any experience out there ?
thanks!

The plastic is deteriorating which is causing them to yellow and become sticky. If you try to paint them it probably won't hold up due to the degrading plastic. It's best to get new welting and have it painted. There is also a guy that sells colored welting as well for the more common colors.

What paint did you use?

I would also use a little spray on adhesion promoter.

My GTO is code 11 Monteago cream….I have some single stage with activator…and dusted on a few coats ….much faster and better than cleaning it….mine were out of the question for cleaning. Plus they are inside and see no wind or weather….you don’t have to ovah think this stuff.
