14” Rally II’s rear will clear disc brakes?
I want to put Rallye II’s on my 69 GTO. It’s a factory disc brake car and has 14” steel wheels that clear the caliper. Since I already bought the original style 14” white line tires I would like to keep them as 14”. Are there special 14” Rallye II’s that clear the caliper or do they all clear the caliper?
I would think that the G body Grand Prix Rallye II’s would work? |
I think any wheel that came on a car with disk brakes will work.
After 1969 I belive they will all work. |
I will have to try a few and see if they work. I have some but no idea where they came from
|
they for sure work ive used them with stock setups and will clear wildwood setup with 1/4" wheel spacer

I'm under the impression Pontiac went with the single piston calipers in '69, so most any 14" Rally II should fit.
(Cars from the previous two years with disc brakes used 4 piston calipers and code JA or JC Rally II 14 x 6 are required to fit those [and I think some even more rare codes might work too]) A main difference between the JA, JC code wheels and all later 14" Rally II wheels is the 5 depressions for the lug holes are almost a 1/4" deeper to create a wider "stand-off" to clear wide (pistons both sides) calipers. Single piston calipers are "svelte" by comparison. |
On that note, is there any truth to the rumour that you couldn't get the rear disc brakes on the 1979-81 Firebirds without having 15x8 wheels? I heard that all WS6/J65 cars came with 15" space savers as the 14" ones could clear the disc brakes.

Didn’t they sell WS6 cars with Rallye II’s?

It's possible to mate the OEM '79-81 rear disc setup with 14x7 rallyII's though some mild grinding which has to be done to an area on the original calipers. Been over 25 years since I setup such a swap, was performed on a 8.5 X-body (c-clip axle) rear that I setup with 3.42's & a posi. Went in a '69 Bird. |
We have one set of these left. They fit 14" rims with no grinding but require custom parking cables.
