Power steering gear box
What is everyone's opinion on close ratio power steering gear boxes vs standard 4 1/4 like what's on my 67 GTO. I need to replace the gearbox, it's making internal noise. Ive heard some people say they have turning radius issues, others say they're stiffer when steering. I can get a Cardone box with the standard 4.1 ratio, which is what I like and am used to, but if people like the upgraded close ratio, I'd like to here some opinions.

The ones with turning radius issue are using F body boxes which have internal steering stops. Works great for a Firebird/Camaro, not so much for the A body

You will pay a LOT for the box shown in post #2....& it won't do anything better than a rebuilt 2 1/2 to 3 turns lock to lock box.

I had my original rebuilt with close-ratio steering by Chip's in Missouri about ten years ago. I like it, but to tell the truth it doesn't seem that different to me.

I swapped a mid 90's Jeep Cherokee box into my 67 several years ago.....big improvement. Pretty straight forward modification.

Some folks like the "wonder touch" steering where you can flick the steering wheel with just one finger. If you see 80s musclecars, or a Jeep GC, at a used car lot, take a test drive? |
I bought the 'upgraded' p/s box [ two piece with alum front end ] from Detroit Speed. It had a clunk in the straight ahead position & DS refused to replace it.
The steering was also too heavy for my liking. The rebuilt factory box that I ended up getting was just right for feel & effort for me. The pumping mechanisms are the same for the pumps. The output PRESSURE is controlled by shims in the pressure valve, & these can be changed. The output VOLUME is determined by the size of the orifice in the outlet fitting, bottom of the pump, where the pressure hose bolts on. |
We bought ours from Lee and couldn't be happier. Great feel, no problem with the turning radius, easy install with no adapters, etc. Probably the best improvement that we made to the car.

I did the borg as well in my tired 74 TA...huge difference and drives like a new car now...good luck with your upgrade!
