Guys,
Does anyone repop the backing plate on the caps?
My caps are fine but some of the clips are broken
At one time they were offered through the dealer as a separate purchase item

Buy some at the swap and remove them.

I waited to reply, because I figured someone "in the know" would speak up;

I am sure they are out there, but it appears as though Ames doesn't offer this part by it self;
Ames offers both black (#FT101P) and red (#FT102P) 'original clip design' center cap assemblies;
The picture in their catalog clearly shows the original style backing on these cap assemblies.

I did look in the Classic Industries catalog, and they don't even offer the 'original clip design' caps what so ever.

Personally, I have been buying ugly-OE 1973-1975(?) caps, and pulling the 'backing plates' off to use in OE-PMD caps.

GM number for just the spring clip was 9792997, superseded to 480303 sometime between 70-72. You may find some NOS searching with those #'s.

I bought correct style nos for my 70. But I seen 2 types on repop, I'm not sure if they are exactly the same (repos) as nos. Probably finding an old set and reusing the backs or getting nos is my suggestion.

my understanding is that there are two kinds of repops;
1) 100% OE style (Ames offers these)
2) original look with different style backing

The red GM medallions actually have two kinds (at least as far as the GM parts are concerned);
First style was a lighter red;
Second style was a darker red.
The darker red ones are the easier ones to find as NOS parts;
Back in 1998 my cousin and I bought (as I recall) eight of the last ten (or so) red PMD medallions left in GM of Canada inventory.;
Some were bagged, some were in boxes.

where these style caps used on only 70-72? And can you share the pics of both styles? Im.curious to know which I have.

Unless I have misunderstood your question;

The question I answered was about reproduction center caps.

Reproduction center caps were not around in decades bygone.

67-72

The early arrowhead caps (73 and up) have the prong backing like the PMD caps.

'73-6 (also in reproduction (OER) with the spring clip riveted, or pinned, in). '77-up used the non-replaceable style.
No separate spring clip sold at this time.
