1971+ rear alternator bracket strap MOUNTING pics please
 

Can anyone provide a pic of the rear alternator mounting bracket mounted on 1971+ firebirds?

I know the one side uses that stud on the thermostat housing, but would like to see it mounted to the head - what stud/bolt is used there and how it holds the alternator.


Also, I see this strap is apparently and oddly not reproduced - used ones get listed for "1971-1974" sometimes and 1971-1979 on other sites. Reason for?

The 70 rear bracket looks similar, but it is way different. Listing should be 1971 to 1975 IIRC. in 76 the alternator bracket changed on the front side and many cars didn't use a rear bracket.
The intake side just slides on a intake bolt/ stud

Here are a couple pictures I had on my computer from my 73. I will try to locate some more.

Most common '71+ rear alt bracket was used with 71+ 10SI alts like the 927's & 928's.

Less common '71-76 Pontiac alternators were the large case 27SI alternators like '71-73 1101015's and the later "1024"s & "1016"s. This setup required an 80 AMP only rear bracket, & were used on '71-76 Pontiacs with factory AC and Rear De Ice (grid style defroster). This set-up is what we are seeing in PEPI's pic of his F-body's 80 amp Alternator.

Have rear brackets for both styles, stocked fairly deep on all 80 amp Pontiac pieces EXCEPT Idler pulleys & fixed front 80 amp alternator brackets.

Thanks man. I see on that thread for the 1971 set up the 2 little steel p/s pump brackets appear to NOT be painted - mine originally showed no signs of black paint either. Wonder if some got black paint and some didn't. As you typically see them painted or powder coated black today.

A little derail, your 73 looks to be the 2nd design emissions system. Do you have the Distributor Spark Delay Valve circled in orange in this picture? Looking for any info on this valve for 2nd design 73.

Mine is the late 2nd design emissions. I do not have that spark delay valve. When we bought the car 43 years ago, the original owner had put a Holley carb on it, but kept the original and we put it back on. The original white striped hose always went from the TCS solenoid to the distributor. Recently I started looking again for one and found one at $300, but when I look at the parts manual, I didn't see where it was listed for my engine. I am starting to wonder if not all engines got it.

Here's some pics of the alt bracket on my 71 TA 455 HO. Can't swear they are 100% correct but they look it to me. No spacers between bracket and alternator on mine.

I noticed your bracket is bent towards the alternator whereas mine is bent away from it, thus requiring the spacer. Item 19. According to this it is for 71-74.

I see that on the drawing. I may very well be missing the spacer and someone may have just tightened the bolt up without the spacer, probably using a shorter bolt than original.
I don't know as much about these 71-up setups.

Appreciate the offer! I did find it. Just had to pay attention and read bulletin 73-T-21A. It was right in the chart. Concerning 455’s, only wagons got the Spark Delay Valves. Other displacement were hit and miss.

Boy, do I feel like an idiot. I have looked at that chart before and never looked all the way to the right and noticed the column that mentioned Spark Delay Valve. That would have saved me a lot of hassle looking for one. Now I have to see if the chart I have has that column. But does confirm that I do not get it on my engine.

Same here lol. I just kept looking at the picture showing the delay valve. I bought an incorrect NOS one for what I believe is the applications that do use it. I definitely paid too much for it and now don’t need it.
