Turbo charge kit for Pontiac
2 Attachment(s)
Wanted one of these kits from HO back then couldn't afford it as a youngster. so cool!
|
Very cool, compressor looks tiny for a 350ci etc but even more interesting is the passenger pipe runs under the front of the block.

HO Racing's TurboForce kits were GREAT!!
Light-years ahead of any competition at the time.
They were designed to be installed on pure stock engines, so their turbo was sized accordingly. We've still got one complete kit on-the-shelf and we are the current caretakers of the LAST Pontiac Craig Hendrickson ever owned. It's a 1976 Esprit with a 400 and a TurboForce kit installed. Here's some info about the Esprit from Wallace Racing: http://www.wallaceracing.com/TurboForce.html |
If I recall correctly, the Rajay 301E turbo had a 57 mm inducer. We adjusted the exhaust housing A/R depending on the engine size-1.7 for 350, 1.8 for400, and 1.3 for 455. An unrestricted 301e was good for about 500 HP.
|
I think there was a typo on the AR for the 455. Shouldn't it be bigger for the 455 for less back pressure?
|
The 1.3 A/R housing was noticeably larger than the .7 housings which is why we used then on the 455s.
|
I didn't mean to disrespect you. But it looks like you added the 1 in front of the .7& .8. Thats probably why I got confused. Thanks.
|
T/A 3. no disrespect taken. In fact, on my second post I added an edit about the typo, but it didn't take.
|
73 TRANSAM. T/A 3.was another typo. so sorry. I hate getting names wrong.
|
No problem. I hope I didn't came out rude as that's not my intent. I owned your books and have a very high respect for you.
|
From a post on this forum a few years back, not sure where. Hope everyone enjoys!
|
I recently just picked up one of these kits leftover from one of the Macho T/A's, mostly incomplete but I've got the air cleaner, the RayJay 301E, and other random parts for it. Getting one of those water gallery covers made for it, and might install it on my VSE Fire Am or maaaaaaaaybe my Macho

If only these were available (perhaps they were?) for my anemic 305 4bbl in my '82 SE...
|
...or better, for my preference of supercharger over turbocharger, a Paxton centrifugal unit...though where either of those would fit under the hood of the '82 I haven't a clue; it's pretty crowded under there (particularly with AC)...

Huh I always thought these were draw through set up’s.
In the 70s draw through a were very popular on go fast boats , but they’d puddle fuel in the intake and caused many fires. They did it so often that they hit a bad name and go fast guys today still refuse to adopt turbos for the most part Blow through was a far better system but back then it was like voodoo to set his. Carb for blow through unless the whole carb was boxed. The turbos of the day were almost always sized too small creating too much heat. 1 the gas crunch was on and efficiency was pretty important . And 2 the carbs were typically sourced from airplanes and they were more “turbo normalized” vs boosted. Meaning they were made to make the thin air up higher more normal than ti be a power adder. |
Rachelsdad:
We did a prototype for the carbureted 3rd gen and it worked really well. Only engine mod (other than turbo kit) was the use of the cop car Z28 clutch fan and shroud. The Chevy crowd showed no interest in it. I guess the stigma of a kit coming from a PONTIAC co. was a deal breaker. Looking at the "bonnets" from the old articles, the first bonnet pictured is the first design based on the prototype bonnet. the next bonnet pictured was the second design with a diffusion section added at the inlet side and an anti-surge valve. The third design was the one in the full kit picture . It featured a contoured underside (like that of a stock air cleaner) and was developed with the aid of our flow bench and pressure probes. Also note the increased size of the diffuser section and elimination of the anti-surge valve. A fourth design was modified for use with right angle inlet Q-jets, and Holley linkage. |
We had second gen Camaro kits also. a DUD.
|
Would be cool if someone could make these turbo kits today... bet they would sell as good or better than they did back then.
Hint hint |
I was at the 2010 GTO Nationals in Wichita. Craig was a speaker there. He talked a lot about this turbo kit. He said there was a lot involved in getting the "hat" to do it's job.
THanks Joe!!! I too could not afford one of those kits, back then. They'd likely be $5000.00 now or more... |
