A good tool with light to check points when opening.

I'm looking for a good light to see when points open. I don't have one and don't want to buy junk.

Good old dwell meter is all I use. Not sure of anything else on the market?

Bill Hanlon 09-18-2025 09:17 PM

If that is all you want it for, junk will do.

Check Craigslist people are basically giving timing lights away these days.

Ah I got baited in and bit the hook...

I have mentioned this before, but IMO, you just can't beat a SUN 7501 inductive timing light. Out of production for over 20 years, you still see plenty of them on E-bay. I got mine for my 16th birthday and I am 68. I have used it on thousands of engines. Still super bright, high quality chrome plated metal body. Rubber nose in case you touch a fan blade. (I have several times). Inductive lead is high quality as well. See nice used ones on E-bay for as little as $25.00 NOS ones on E-Bay for $75.00 or so. Works fine with all MSD style ignition systems. No dial back feature, just a basic timing light.

Ok thanks guys. I was watching RoadWorthy rescues. He needed to ck if he had spark that little light blinked when points opened. Never used one. Thought simple easy.

Like I answered before, a cheap (under $3 at Harbor Freight) test lamp will tell you when the points are open.

That assumes that the rest of the ignition system is working, the key is on and a battery is installed.

Will it tell you if spark is happening? No.

Misunderstood that one and can't delete it. Sorry. Carry on.

A magnetic base doo-dab to hold your cel phone and one of the magnetic base lights would allow one to record the event...

I watch most of his stuff. He's lost some weight. I have not seen any explanation for it on his videos. I don't subscribe to his paid for shows, though...

I have learned a little from him, not a lot. There's been times where I wish I was there, I could have helped solve a problem...

OK so you're coming clean about working on lightening werlers and sparkalators? Well this is a whole different ball game then. Good luck on your search.
