Original Tire Choices - 1972 Formula
 

Working on a 1972 Formula that originally came with 14" Honeycomb wheels. However, the plans are to install a set of 15" Honeycomb wheels. What would have been the original tire choices in 1972 for 15' wheels?

Goodyear Polyglas or Firestone Wide Oval

F60/15 for some reason I believe the Poly glas would be correct, but the repop wide oval radials look interesting

F60x15 on a 15x7 wheel. 235/60R15 is basically same size as the F60....

Yes, we have a 72 with an original Firestone wide oval f60-15

F70-14.. could even be black wall.

Because I suspect 1970 through 1972 used the same tires, here is an original 1971 wheel and tire.

Edit: According to a superbirdclub article, this is a second week of July 1970 dated tire;
= 28th week of 1970;
It is pre-DOT with an eight character date code which starts with 'A7'
According to this chart:
A7 = 28th week of 1970; 2nd week of July 1970

Also, this is a KN wheel dated July 28 1970 - which is one of two dates that wheels with this code were made.

I believe in 72, Either Firestone or Goodyears could have been installed with F60x15. I bought a 72 Formula 455 W/ handling PKG off the original owner back in 1979. It had Wide ovals on it. At the time I worked for goodyear and asked him about the tires He said it originally came with wide ovals, It also still had the original spare.

I currently own a 72 T/A. I have the original build sheet. It shows "UDDL 5" as a tire code."UDDL" was a code that goodyear had printed in large letters on the tread of the tire. "5" was that my T/A came with 5 full size tires, no mini spare.

I can't speak for other years however, most auto manufacturers would prefer to have multiple sources for parts in case of a supply issue. I would have to imagine that would be the case but who knows.
