Screw-in stud conversion
My 1966 092 heads have been drilled and helicoiled for 7/16 screw-in rocker studs. when I install the studs do I just apply oil to the threads, or do they intrude into coolant passages and need sealant or pipe dope on the threads?

Should not go into coolant passages. Maybe locktite it?
Are they shouldered studs or straight? :confused: |
Straight 7/16 top and bottom to allow adjustable rockers. The reason I mention motor oil is because the Butler torque specs list calls for it, although that's referring to heads with screw-in studs originally.

Later factory ones were shouldered, so basically tightening on the base. With a straight stud it would be bottoming or end of threads stopping it?
Anyway the studs will probably be a good improvement. :) |
I can't remember for sure, but it seems like I've used thin lock nuts at the bottom of straight studs in some cases.

Use sealer on the threads or it will suck oil down past the threads and smoke.

My mistake, when you asked if the studs were shouldered I thought you were referring to the "bottleneck" area like on the non-adjustable studs. The rocker studs I'm using have the top and bottom separated by the enlarged hex portion, so shouldered as you call them.

The machine work is already done. The studs were left uninstalled because they will have pushrod guides under them that have to be adjusted once the heads are on the engine and then the studs will be torqued to hold themselves and the guides in place. The question is, at that time do the bottom threads of the studs require any kind of sealant?

No sealant.
They don’t break through into the intake port, unless someone made a big mistake during the installation of the Helicoils. |
