Needed keys made for my GTO. Went to True value.. $2.99 each but they didn't work. Turns out the blanks are a bit too long keys don't insert far enuf. In the meantime I went to Ace...$6.99 each.. only the trunk key worked. I did a little file work on the True value ones and they work now. Going to take the Ace one back, for 6.99 apiece!

Would it be too much for me to say I miss the old days where products worked and customer service was a given?

I have had the same issue recently. We changed the locks on our house recently and we wanted enough keys made for us, and we had to go through 3 different locations before we got one that actually worked. One would think with "improved" technology it would be more accurate.

I just got trunk keys for Trans Am from Ace and they fit fine both of them. The part that surprised me was one trying to find someone who still makes these keys and then the price 5.00 a key. Back in the day it was like 1.50-2.00 per key. Walmart does not do keys anymore and I went to Lowes and he looked up key and said we dont keep that blank anymore. The same story at Home Depot so off to Ace but I guess at Ace at least you get free popcorn:popcorn:, also I was suprised my Ace store no longer carries hand tools

I took blanks for a key no one stocked,that I purchased online,and no one would cut them.
I even offered to pay for a blank(that I wouldnt use).The GM dealership was only one that would bother.

Years ago I took some GM key Blanks I got at a swap to Ace and them make keys for my 74

I bought blanks for my '75 Firebird from Ames and took them to a professional locksmith shop to get cut. They all work perfectly.

I've had pretty spotty luck with hardware store keys.

I used the key codes from my 66 GTO PHS to have new keys made. There are a few places online that do it. Of course if the locks have been changed this wont work

dealership required proof of ownership for me to have keys cut to code.

This is what I did too for the 73 Trans Am, three new sets, all three sets are perfect, cheap considering everything else spent on the car. The lock smith I used read the original keys I had, then cut to code.

Still have old 60s hand held key puncher from work when got new computer in 90s.
Sold old blanks to a guy $5 each.bout 100 blanks.
He probly made alot $ online sales.
Kept 2 sets each uncut for 67 68 FBs even though had 2 pair each original.

I have the original keys for my '67 GTO but I had a couple of other sets made 40 years ago. I recently was looking into having a new set cut for backup. My extra sets were Cole National, don't use the 67 style hex shaped head (or whatever you'd call it) they were the early 70s rectangular and oval keys.

Old Cole National Keys - Ignition is B48A, Trunk is B49B. See ekeyblanks.com for reference. Says B48A is manufacturer equivalent to Axxess 4 and B49B is equivalent to Axxess 8, which are sometimes found at hardware store kiosks.

It can be iffy sometimes trying to make a good copy of a 50+ year key...many are worn smooth or just plain worn out. Your best bet is to find someone (old timer locksmith) with a key clipper as RW mentioned he has.

You can either make it by the key code (many times stamped on the lock casing) or you can measure the key cut depth, you'll get a good crisp key cut that way.
