Sounds similar to the '41 Pontiac 2-Door Coupe that I had. The glass side back and down, gave an opening of 3-4 inches. It was hard to operate but that could be because the car was 75 years old.

On my '38 it is on top of the frame rail visible when looking in through the driver's hood. The VIN is stamped near the firewall if I remember correctly.
