That is an important and valid point and I think younger people are given a distorted view of actually how the 60s were. The long hair, hippy, protest, ete era did not really get into full style ( if you want to call it that ) until the last 1/3 or possibly 1/4 of the decade. What many percieve as the '60s' was more the 70s.
Things may have started to go south in SF in 1966 but, the rest of the US did not follow right away and some areas did not at all. Long hair was in vogue well into the 80s but, was gone by the time Reagan left office.
