I had a '67 Tempest 4dr driver that would run out at about an 1/8 tank intermittantly - years later when I parted it out, I found a short section of petrified garden hose in the tank. I guessing it was rolling around in there keeping the float from going all the way down.
The garden hose was obviously a piece that broke off when someone tried to siphon gas out of it at some point in it's life.
