It's an issue on any Pontiac running 12:1 CR and higher, due to the 4 fasteners per cylinder arrangement. Bump the compression up higher through more cubes and bigger bores and the problem is only exacerbated by less area between cylinders (especially on the center two cylinders where the heat from the siamesed exhaust ports wreaks havoc).
I remember a conversation with Jack Gaydosh about high CR and head gaskets when he was still running Pontiac power in his old car. I remember him saying when he ran coppers with an O-ring that he had to replace the gaskets after about 15 passes because the leakdown between the two center cylinders would be too great. He went with Cometics when they became available and was able to more than double the cycle life of the head gaskets.
