I believe the inner door handles are different between 1970 and 1971-74. In this thread in post #6 I show some from a couple of different cars.

Look close at the chrome ones and you will see that one has a smooth inside (1970) while the other has two square holes in that location (1971-74). The back sides of the plastic inserts also have either a smooth surface or two square pegs that fit into those holes. The 1971-74 plastic would not work with the 1970 handles. Where the 1970 uses the tabs on the four corners only, the 1971-74 uses only two tabs along with the two pegs, so even if you ground down the pegs the inserts would not have 4 tabs to hold them in. The 1970 plastics would work with the later handles. The 1971-74 variation has a REV 2 molded into all the parts. Here's some numbers for the plastic inserts. I don't have those door handles in front of me, but I can gather numbers from thoes as well.
