I would pull the carb off, prob it up on 2 blocks, fill the carb and see if it leaks. Give it some time. Could be the well plugs (yes- I know epoxy sealed) or casting porosity.
old Q jets can get leaky.
If you must go to a pusher pump, the Carter P4602rv comes with a bypass/check valve arrangement.
It's true that fuel can be drawn through Carter elec. pumps, but it becomes a restriction at higher speeds.
