You maintain the same ride height and outer tire diameter by using a lower profile tire. If you didn't maintain the same outer tire diameter, not only would your ride height increase, but your speedometer would also become inaccurate.

I like a good amount of sidewall on these cars, too. There's no doubt that 17s handle better and there are many more tire options available for 17" wheels compared to 14" and 15" wheels, but 17s are not for everybody. Only way I'd put 17s on my car is if I went with what b-man did, but doing so is pretty costly.
