Has Anyone Lowering Seats In Their Classic Pontiac?
I finished a resto-mod on my 1966 GTO and the new seat cushions have me sitting to high.
I'm tall and my new line of sight is right at the boarder of the blue tint at the top of the windshield. When I take the rails of the seat, I sit just about perfect. I was wondering if anyone else has lowered their seats without removing some of the cushion material.

I'm in the same boat after installing the new Legendary Rally seats in my 67. I'm more forward and too high. I think it might be tough to get them as low as you're talking, however it may be possible to cut off the feet, take some material out and reweld. Then you'll probably have an issue with the adjuster on the side hitting the floor. Maybe there are tracks out there being made for this purpose? Might do a search on that. I'll likely be doing the same...

Very common problem, it's the foam/cushioned used, and/or replacement seat pans.
ACI is the best option but still requires 'fitment' in many cases. I believe the pans are not the same as OE, with a support wire or two extra. Same with the uprights, foam/cushion and replacement back spring assembly. It moves the body sitting in the seat forward, to a higher position in the seat overall. That, along with the seat pan being higher is a double-whammy. I have repop sliders too, have not compared those to OE ones, so that too could be a factor. My experiences are with the 68-72 A-bodies, not sure if the same applies to other years/bodies but suspect it does. .

I’ve met the original poster and he’s 6’ 5” tall, lowering and moving the front seats enough will be a challenging endeavor.

They make 2" seat track extenders for 66-72 A bodies, but doesn't really help with headroom (I'm 6'4") and need to be massaged to fit correctly. Also makes it tight for the side adjuster vs. seat belt retractor. Always wondered if you could drop the floor a little (like they commonly do with Panteras) to get some additional headroom for those blessed with height?

I lowered the drivers seat in my 68 bird cut 1” out of the raised area of the tracks then added a tab to the front to make it to front bolt holes. It lowered it and moved it back a little.

Thanks for all the input. I really appreciate it.
Seats have the original pans and springs. Only the foam and covers has been replaced. Prior to resto, I was sitting on the springs. Tracks are repops and identical to originals, except for the knobs. I thought about having the legs cut and rewelded, but then the adjuster would be on the floor. I bought some 1/8"x4" steel stock to make a non adjustable, on the floor mount, but the floor from front mount to rear mount is not flat making it difficult. Plus the rear mount points are obstructed by the steel stock. (the tracks allow for movement to expose the mount points) I haven't figured this one out yet. . .

Sort of? I went to a 4th gen seat in my 1st gen firebird which just naturally sit in a lower position. They also recline which helps.

Yeah Im curious there too, is there a year range of corvair brackets that are bolt in to certain A bodies?

. . Been doing a search for Corvair seat tracks since I read this, and most tracks look identical to my 66 A-body tracks.. Can you elaborate as to what year Corvair tracks are lower and would fit my 66 GTO?

From what I’ve read the Corvair seats are almost identical to the early A-body seats, at least the ‘64 and ‘65. So it’s interesting that the seat tracks are lower and may bolt in like the original seat tracks.
Maybe there’s a Corvair forum you could search for and find information about different year Corvair seats. Corvairs changed to the later sleeker body style and doubled jointed rear suspension in 1965 but by then production numbers dwindled due to the bad press generated from earlier swing axle cars with production finally ending in 1969. Probably easier to find the early model seats and tracks I would think and I doubt there was any big change to the seats/tracks in later years.
