I have an opportunity to purchase a 71 Trans Am 455 ho (ye code) 4 spd. white with black interior 67,000 orig miles??. Good 20 footer minimal rust issues, good paint, honey combs, good interior. Would not need to be restored. Good daily driveror restore later. What would be a good ball park for this car in this condition.
Also, is that (YE) code correct for that transmission???


Any help here would be nice.

YE code is an automatic transmission block, so, either the car was originally an auto or it is not numbers matching. Check the vin on the block and tranny to see which is the case.

According to NADA website low retail is $17220 and average retail is $35245 and high retail is $58660. This is without air. Tag on around 1200, 2500 and 4200 respectively for air. This is the NADA value and may not represent what someone is willing to pay for this car. I am sure at BJ auctions the price would be much higher. Hope this helps.

If that is correct that the YE block is not correct for that transmission how does this effect the value???

68 bird is correct. You would have to see if the Trani has been changed or the motor. Either way in my opinion it would only hurt the value $5-7K as it is still a rare car. I would make sure that if the trani was swapped from auto to 4 spd you should make sure it was done properly. You need ask the owner if he has the build sheet. It will tell you if it was a auto or 4 spd. Hope this helps

I know that they're called price 'guides' but they're all over the map. I'm confused over the pricing. The NADA site has an option to check off engines and lists all available in each trim (base, esprit, formula, trans am), including the 455/335hp HO for 71. Then when it comes up with a value for the car it adds 20% value to the car because of the motor. But there was only one engine choice for the 71 TA, so is the added 20% value erroneous and only meant to add value to say a forumula for that year.

The Nada site also list the value of a 73SD at 46K in excellent condition.

There is a 71 TA in hemmings right now for 79K.

OK, I see your point and do not profess to be an expert on 71 TA's although I have been following the prices lately. Was there not the option for the ram air III or Ram air IV in 1971? I don't know myself but I thought there was. I like to look at NADA and other "guides" if I am looking at buying because to me this is a more realistic, not so inflated value. If I were selling however, sure the Barrett Jackson and other auctions and Hemmings is a place to look to see how much people with too much money are willing to spend on a upper end car for a luxury investment. To me if I were buying a 73 SD $49K (NADA top cond) sounds maybe a little low but $125-150K sounds a little retarded. Yea, I know all the mopar stuff is bringing in that much and why shouldn't the pontiacs. Well in my humble opinion I think the mopar prices have been retarded for some time now. And if your selling a rare car and someone is willing to pay an exorbitant amount of cash hey thats great, I guess I will just bow out like I am going to do with this thread. Sorry Transamrip, Hopefully this does not cloud the issue with your deal.

If motor is original and the tranny is not, I don't think it will have as much of an impact as if it is the other way around. From what I have heard non#s motors will have a 15-20% hit on the value of a done car. So if it would normally sell for $50k done, probably expect $40ish for non#s.

In checking the motor numbers, also make sure it has the correct carb, distributor, and shaker setup. These are very expensive items to find if missing.

What the car is worth is highly dependent on how correct and complete it is with all of its hard to get components.

Last week a friend of mine in the San Jose CA area forwarded me a craigslist link on this very same car. There was no price and no reference to the location but the pictures were the same as this ad. So I emailed the guy and he sent a return email stating the car was in southern California and the price was $8000. What a diference a week makes!

Found out more about the car. It is the orignal motor with auto than was converted to 4 spd. Has the correct carb dist and shaker. Waiting on more pics to look further.
