I used to let it just go down my driveway but now have this gut feeling I shouldnt be doing that. I called the local parts stores who take my oil and nobody takes it. Local shop has a company come get it out of big drums and will not let anyone dump thiers in w/ thiers. Short of calling the local HAZMAT office for the county, Any other ideas?

I thought that if it was diluted it was harmless to animals and environment. If so run a hose into container till gone/clear,,,not that I would do that

Elefantrider, you might be thinking of Sierra Antifreeze. It's safer... less toxic. Supposedly NAPA carries it.

I think Sierra uses more propylene glycol than ethylene in it.

Why not call the hazmat office? They should be able to tell you what is suppose to be done with it. Just do not tell you spilled any.......

Some places you can poor it down the drain, but I am not sure what the limitation are in your area.

Hey, most mobil/service stations take it as does your local city salvage. Worst case you can put your used drain-fluids into containers and set it by your local service station after they close.

That stuff is nasty. I try not to use it. Prefer redline water treatment instead.. at least it LOOKS less nasty. I think there is biodegradable antifreeze out now. In anycase, I try to reuse it when possible. Most of that stuff doesn't break down like oil and is good for 5-10 years.

What I do for all of my USED oils and freezes..

The used oil that I get from oil changes goes in a 5 gallon bucket from Home Depot. When I get enouh of it I bring it to the shell station next to the house. They have a waste oil heater that they use for heat in the winter. They NEVER complain and take as much as I can give them for obvious reasons. If the oil has gear oil or ATF I bring it to the town waste facility.

Same goes for antifreeze. I fill 5 gallon buckets and drop it off at the town recycling facility. I have reused it if it is not old. I put a piece of cheesecloth over another 5 gallon bucket and strain it over that. Works good.

Also check your town, if you have city sewage, they might allow you to pour it down the drain. Seriously. Check on it.

I call my local HAZMAT and they tell me who in my area will take motor oil and antifreeze. Through them I found a local garage that takes both motor oil and antifreeze. Works out good, only have to make one trip to one place and drop it off, no questions.

maybe contact your local township or municipality building for recycling info.

i'm in FFX county the ox road transfer station - nee DUMP - takes it.

I'll give the county a call next week. I was just curious and do appreciate the help. I am now living in St. Johns Florida and the local transfer station is about 1/2 hour away. Didnt think about them.

County recycling place takes it, what they do with who knows. In my old age I just feel right about dumping it down the drain anymore.
