Maxilo, I am doing an HO, but as Pinionhead and HO said on #'s, parts & cost..... If not hung up on matching numbers and dates, any early 70's 2 bolt 455 will be already drilled for 4 bolt, and rather than a spendy & hard to find "HO" block, 4 bolt caps can be added to a 2 bolt block (what I did) on a YC 1971 block (align bore rqd.). I spent 2000 on 71 HO heads and 700 on 71 intake. Had block and all misc parts also. I expect to have $6-8000 in build maybe when done on top of heads & intake parts cost, so 10K engine ballpark maybe. Forged psitons and rods and roller valvetrain is almost half of that cost. A "stock parts" build could be substantially less. Yes I will have a "mutt" engine but do not care, it will make equal fun as any.

The white under carriage looks bizarre.......
The mopar guys used to LOVE yellow plug wires.... Door panel uppers are 73-74 double deluxe..... Whoever buys this car will not know ANYTHING about Pontiacs....and LOVE it.....

To be fair., if I was buying a MOPAR there are lots of things that could be incorrect and wouldn't know. Like, an ironing board for a rear spoiler.
If the bones of the TA are solid, other than the stupid hood pins, the faults I see could easily be corrected. I Hate hood pins. |

A bit of bad news on HO build, after disassembly of 455 block, hard use 20 years ago showed bad spot on main on crank one location, bearing failure of some sort. Looks salvageable, will have machinist report on in a few days.... Question for y'all: for a quality build, would you have issues with using a turned down crank or would you buy a Butler (Eagle?) new one? Is 71 factory crank now...

So THX to a great member here for a crank. Local machinist just did complete diagnosis that explained motor history. Bottom end was built 20+ yrs ago.
Bad align bore when 4 bolt caps added then. Bad piston clearance ring to bore. Result very bad crank scarring one spot and scuffed forged pistons. I used a Chevy racer machine shop guy in Oregon. Bonehead errors. Bad move I guess. I did hammer on that engine. Good news is Matt's HO heads reported as "very nice". Very happy with my machinists diligence. Block off to be align bored properly. Anyone here use Cliff Rugles round port roller cam? Custom grind he recommends. Impressive dyno sheet on an SD. Nice power sub 5500.
