Is it the throat diameter and what ratio do you like to see (int/exh) for a 9,000 to 10,000 rpm 500+ cube engine? I know this may be something you don't want to disclose, but need to ask. I'm wanting to know for my heads.

For some the exhaust seems to be the red headed step child in the head equation I have never believed it and never figured it could hurt by having a good flowing exhaust

I know its a balancing act but how much do you give the exhaust valve and take away from the intake? Signs that you've tipped the scales too far one??

Man Chris I'd like to hear a few more bars hummed on this topic. I've always thought cracking the EVO a little sooner fix the issue driving the focus on intake port/valve size.

And Alrighty then what do we have left....
Intake manifold. So again this is an area where a lot of guys just don't get it. They want a big hp engine and their uterus falls out when someone quotes them $1500 to port an intake. NEWSFLASH $1500 isn't even going to come close to supporting a 1100-1200 hp engine with a single 4 cast intake. Truth is theres a ton of time in this. I'm fortunate in that john and i are friends and he didn't charge me too much extra for me to "help". I have more time in mine than i thought it would take him. And he had a bunch more time in it than me. You're looking at $4000 maybe more either way cast or sheet. Its what it is. If you put a $1500 ported victor on my engine I suspect you would watch 150-200 hp disappear. And no its not all cut into a hundred peices and welded back together......lol.

And while we're at it carburetors.....forget $500 used dominators and new $850-1000 carbs.
Nope we are in the land of $2400-3000 carburetors. Time to put your big boy pants on and step up. These carbs used fetch $14-600. And you gotta have it. Put a 1050 dom on it and wave goodbye to lots of power.

On my engine we are running regular t&d shaft set up. 1.75 ratio. Nothing fancy. Or exotic.

You must want to puke when something goes wrong, adding up the cost of this thread could put a kid through college!!!!

Yes. But the hard costs are a constant. Ie even with a issue you don't replace everything. And this is the do it yourself cheap version. Just dop it off at a well know builder and you will spend "tons" more. Guaranteed.

Measured airflow on a flow bench ,on a exhaust port = big fat nothing! Just saying. On the ex side the bench will send you down the wrong path , fast.

That doesn't even scratch the surface of bizzaro world in engine building. Most folks in the maximum effort category are wiling to shell 6-10k on cylinder head castings and rightly so after all the work involved. But, for the engine guy, who is responsible for making it all happen .... you think he can charge 10k labor? Rarely......... if ever. |
