By the way, is the '68 collar plastic or metal? I noticed that Ames only shows a plastic collar for '68.

in post 5 you can see "thanks to Verdoro 68" the reliefs cut or notched into the base of the spoke by the weld ..
I think this is a collapsw point for collision... having a metal collar "Post 12" on the 68 and all the new safety regs in 69 I feel they went to plastic as the metal would hinder the collapsing of the wheel.... plastic would blow out... I have seen/bought /held several bent sport wheels thru the years... many with impact marks on the collars if they were still intact ... Scott |

67 was the first year for collapsing (energy absorbing) column. 69 was first year for the locking steering column. I always assumed that in 69 they shallowed up the wheel due to complaints about earlier wheels being to close to the driver but perhaps the 69 column was longer so the wheel was made shallower to maintain the location. It would be interesting to measure the length of a 68 column (say from the firewall) to the steering wheel mating surface and compare with a 69 column.
