i did the same thing back in the day with my 1st car, a 70 base bird, 350. i measured what i needed for some brackets & my dad had them made at the machine shop at western electric. i bolted the brackets to the core support so they hung down behind the grills. man that really looked "cool". in fact, a few of my high school buddies wanted to do the same for their cars, unfortunately, there weren't many cars with the type of grill that allowed that, so many just hung them below the bumper, which led to alot of broken & stolen fog lights.

hiding them behind the grill was great for daytime driving where they were barely seen.
