It's simply age, doesn't matter if it was in a climate controlled enviro, it would have to be a completely oxygen-free enviro to prevent breakdown.
You don't have to take my word for it, just look at the manufacturers and OEMs, USDOT, NHTSA, and others, they say the same thing. Just drive down the highway for a few miles and look at the shoulders littered with shreded tires, that should give you a clue. Crossing the auction block is a lot different than driving on the highway at 70 mph. But again, if you're comfortable with that, it's totally up to you. The gene pool needs a cleansing occassionally, and we've all seen the shows/movies of people doing stuff that they thought was perfectly safe. .
