"Boost is a great equalizer, no matter whose name is on the block and heads".

Most accurate assessment I've seen glancing over this thread. Boost makes up for most of if not all the deficiencies in the basic design, and a very good way to go provided the rest of the engine is strong enough.

I'd love to see all the big names blowing at least 5-7psi to these V-8 gas engines. For sure the Dodge Hemi needs it, I've owned two of them and they certainly make the power but EXTREMLY thirsty even if you drive them like a little old lady.

I'm pretty much on the fence a the moment and not sure what I'm going to do next for a truck. I exploited the diesels to death, and have owned all the "good ones" made until they started added DEF and CAT's to them. Looking back at all of them to the 6.5 Chevy I'd say that overall the 2001 5.9 Cummins was the best of the bunch in terms of power and fuel economy. The 2007 Duramax was nearly as good, but couldn't reach the fuel economy numbers of the Cummins. The 7.3 Ford was excellent, but the auto trans behind it was a pile of chit. Same with the early Dodge 5.9, excellent engine, auto trans was a complete joke to even think about putting behind the powerful diesel engine.

When I quit towing long distances and heavy loads I got away from the diesels and went to a 2003 Dodge with a 5.7 Hemi. Really loved that truck but on it's best day down hill driving it as gently as you possibly could 13.5 mpg's. I replaced it back in 2017 with a new 3/4 ton Dodge hemi, and had to send it on down the road. What a pile of bovine excrement! I had more issues with that truck than I can count. It would take 20 pages to discuss all of them here, couldn't get rid of it fast enough.

I'm liking my 2018 Silverado with the 5.3 LS engine. Does everything I want and no problems whatsoever anyplace. As mentioned earlier plenty of power for anything I've tried to do with it, and EXCELLENT fuel economy when you're not towing and driving like you have some sense. It actually gets better fuel economy on the highway than my wife's 2015 Nissan Rogue, which amazes me.

Now making comparisons I'd still rather have a late 1970's Chevy 4 x 4 truck or Blazer with a 350 in it, backed by a TH350, cast iron transfer case and 12 bolt diff with 3.07 gears in it. Simple, strong, worry free and nearly as good everyplace as a new one for about $50,000 less money........Cliff
