before you try to repair the top soft surface;
Look at the underside, and address that I have tried in the past to repair my original console (and although I believe 1970 consoles used a different plastic), I was never able to find a fix that stayed on... If the backing is broken, and you can fix that, then maybe go to an ineterior shop that specializes in this stuff - I've seen some incredible vinyl and leather repairs.
